As on November, 2019 there are 71 companies in Ukraine using Small Hydro-Power Plants (SHPP), the cumulative capacity of such plants being approximately 111.7 MW of electric power. Today the "green tariff" for the small hydro PP (1000 - 10 000 кW) set into operation after January 01, 2015 is 0.1045 €/kW*hour ( 0.0942 €/kW*hour since 2020);  for the mini hydro PP (200 - 1000 кW) is 0.1395 €/kW*hour ( 0.1255 €/kW*hour since 2020); for the micro hydro PP (less 200 кW) is 0.1745 €/kW*hour ( 0.1572 €/kW*hour since 2020). The more information about the effective HPPs and the "green tariff'' amount you can see on the National Regulatory Commission in the Sphere of Energ Utilities (NRCEU) website.

While planning to implement an SHPP construction project, one should take into account the following factors determining the project success:

  • Technical details of the SHPP design (water intake, upstream pipeline, discharge outlet, the SHPP construction, etc.);
  • Hydrological regime of the river;
  • The local community's attitude to construction of such facilities in the given region;
  • Ability to connect to power supply system.

The project development budget on a 'turn-key' basis will be approximately € 2400 per 1 MW of the rated capacity on the average. The rate of return, as well as other investment indexes of the project efficiency, depend mainly upon the capital costs amount. Operating costs affect economics of a project insignificantly, and such costs will be determined by value of the technical service, qualified staff maintenance, and security.
